- Scientific Director, IDSIA since 19951
- Director, AI Initiative; Co-Chair, Center for Generative AI, KAUST since 20211
Jürgen Schmidhuber is scientific director of the Swiss AI Lab IDSIA and director of the AI Initiative at KAUST, where Schmidhuber also co-chairs the KAUST Center for Generative AI. Schmidhuber's lab developed Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and other deep learning methods that became widely used in speech recognition, translation, and related applications.1

Accomplishments
IDSIA, KAUST, and NNAISENSE
Schmidhuber has been scientific director of IDSIA in Lugano since March 1995, director of the AI Initiative at KAUST since 2021, and co-chair of the KAUST Center for Generative AI since 2024. Schmidhuber co-founded NNAISENSE in 2014 and served as president (2014–2017) and chief scientist (2017–2022).1
LSTM and deep learning
Schmidhuber's lab's CTC-trained LSTM was the first recurrent neural network to win international pattern recognition competitions (2009). Subsequent lab work included early GPU-trained deep feedforward networks and contest-winning computer vision systems. Schmidhuber has received the IEEE CIS Neural Networks Pioneer Award (2016) and other honors.1
