Hugo Larochelle became scientific director of Mila on 2 September 2025, succeeding Laurent Charlin after Yoshua Bengio moved to founder and scientific advisor. Larochelle is an adjunct professor at Université de Montréal and McGill University. Mila's announcement says Larochelle completed a PhD with Yoshua Bengio and a postdoc with Geoffrey Hinton, co-founded Whetlab (acquired by Twitter in 2015), and later led Google's Montreal AI research lab (Google Brain), now part of Google DeepMind.¹²
