Julien Chaumond

CTO, Hugging Face

Julien Chaumond is CTO of Hugging Face. In the huggingface.js repository, Chaumond authored the 2024 pull request that added local apps, a registry that now lists local tools such as llama.cpp, LM Studio, and Ollama with the commands for running a Hub model in each, as well as an earlier one adding a parser for remotely hosted GGUF model files. Chaumond co-authored the 2025 announcement of hf, the Hugging Face command-line tool for downloading files from and uploading them to the Hub, and has committed changes to it in 2026. Chaumond is also an author of the Transformers paper.12345678

Career

Julien Chaumond is CTO of Hugging Face, the title shown on Chaumond's GitHub profile and used in Hugging Face's August 2024 post announcing that XetHub was joining the company. In that post, Chaumond is quoted on moving the Hub's repository storage from Git LFS to Hugging Face's own storage backend, and the post notes that the first version of the Hub was built on Git LFS in 2020.12

Open-source work

Chaumond is one of the authors of the Transformers paper, submitted in October 2019, which the Transformers library's README asks users to cite. In the huggingface.js repository, Chaumond opened the March 2024 pull request for a parser that reads GGUF model files hosted remotely over HTTP range requests, and in 2026 added the Q2_0 quantization type to it.89510

Chaumond's pull request adding local apps to huggingface.js was merged in May 2024. Its registry file lists local tools such as llama.cpp, LM Studio, and Ollama, and the Hub documentation explains how a model page's "Use this model" menu shows the command for running the model in a chosen app.3411

Chaumond co-authored the July 2025 post introducing hf, the redesigned Hugging Face command-line tool for working with files on the Hub. The huggingface_hub commit history lists further changes by Chaumond in 2026.67

Work and contributions

  • Local apps on the Hugging Face Hub

Authored huggingface.js pull request 659, merged in May 2024, which added local-apps.ts, a registry that now lists local applications such as llama.cpp, LM Studio, and Ollama with snippets for running a model in each. The Hub documentation describes picking a local app from a model page's "Use this model" menu and running the command it shows.3411

  • GGUF parser in huggingface.js

Authored the March 2024 pull request that added a parser for GGUF files hosted remotely, read over HTTP range requests. A July 2026 commit by Chaumond added the Q2_0 quantization type to it to match llama.cpp.510

  • hf command-line tool

Co-authored the July 2025 post introducing hf, the redesigned Hugging Face CLI for downloading files from and uploading them to the Hub. The huggingface_hub commit history shows CLI changes by Chaumond in 2026, such as new hf subcommands.67

  • Transformers

Listed among the authors of the Transformers paper, which the library's README asks users to cite.89
