Jeff Huber is a founder of Chroma, which builds an open-source embedding and search database for AI applications. With co-founder Anton Troynikov, Huber wrote the company's 2023 post explaining why the team built Chroma as an open-source project, and Huber has co-authored Chroma technical reports on retrieval evaluation and long-context model behavior.123

Chroma

Huber's site lists Huber as a founder of Chroma. In an April 2023 company post signed by Jeff, Anton and the Chroma team, the founders described Chroma as an AI-native open-source embedding database that lets developers add state and memory to AI applications, and explained that the project began from interpretability work on model latent spaces.12

The Chroma repository on GitHub was created in October 2022 and is published under the Apache 2.0 license.4

Research and writing

Huber is a co-author of two Chroma technical reports. Generative Benchmarking (April 2025) proposed generating evaluation queries for retrieval systems from production data, and Context Rot (July 2025) evaluated how 18 language models handle growing input lengths.53

Huber's site also hosts essays on AI and company building, including "The Rise of Context Engineering" (August 2025) and "AI is a new computer" (June 2025).1

Work and contributions

  • Chroma (open-source database) Open-source code

Co-founded the company behind the Apache-2.0 Chroma database, which the founders' 2023 post says they built because they needed an easy-to-use open-source vector database for their own work.24

  • Context Rot (Chroma technical report) Published research

Co-authored, with Kelly Hong and Anton Troynikov, a 2025 report measuring how model performance changes as input length grows across 18 language models.3

  • Generative Benchmarking (Chroma technical report) Published research

Co-authored a 2025 report on generating retrieval benchmark queries that reflect real user queries from production data.5
