Co-founder and Chief Science Officer, Mistral AI

  • Co-founder and Chief Science Officer, Mistral AI1

Guillaume Lample is a co-founder and the Chief Science Officer of Mistral AI, according to the company's about page. Lample's GitHub profile lists a research scientist role at Facebook AI Research, working on unsupervised machine translation, symbolic mathematics, and theorem proving. Lample is one of the equal-contribution authors of LLaMA: Open and Efficient Foundation Language Models (2023), written at Meta AI, and first author of papers on unsupervised machine translation (2017), cross-lingual language model pretraining (XLM, 2019), and deep learning for symbolic mathematics (2019). Lample co-authored the Mistral 7B and Mixtral of Experts papers, which say the models are released under the Apache 2.0 license.12345678

Research at Facebook AI Research

As a research scientist at Facebook AI Research, Guillaume Lample worked on unsupervised machine translation, symbolic mathematics and theorem proving. Lample was first author of a 2017 paper on translating between languages using only monolingual corpora, and of a 2018 follow-up that proposed both neural and phrase-based variants of the approach.249

Lample was also first author of XLM (2019), which extends language model pretraining across languages, and a 2019 paper applying deep learning to symbolic integration and differential equations. In 2022 Lample was first author of HyperTree Proof Search, an online training procedure for a transformer-based automated theorem prover inspired by AlphaZero.5610

Language models

Lample is one of the equal-contribution authors of the 2023 LLaMA paper from Meta AI, which presented a family of foundation language models trained on publicly available data. Mistral AI's about page says the company was started in April 2023, with Lample as co-founder and Chief Science Officer.31

At Mistral AI, Lample co-authored the papers for Mistral 7B (2023) and the sparse mixture-of-experts model Mixtral (2024), both released under the Apache 2.0 license, and is listed among the authors of the 2025 report on Magistral, a reasoning model trained with reinforcement learning.7811

Work and contributions

  • LLaMA Published research

One of five equal-contribution authors of LLaMA: Open and Efficient Foundation Language Models (2023), whose author list gives a Meta AI affiliation; the paper introduces foundation models from 7B to 65B parameters and says all models were released to the research community.3

  • Mistral 7B and Mixtral 8x7B Open weights

Co-author of the Mistral 7B (2023) and Mixtral of Experts (2024) papers; both abstracts say the models are released under the Apache 2.0 license.78

  • Unsupervised machine translation, XLM, and symbolic mathematics Published research

First author of Unsupervised Machine Translation Using Monolingual Corpora Only (2017), Cross-lingual Language Model Pretraining (2019, with Alexis Conneau), and Deep Learning for Symbolic Mathematics (2019, with François Charton).456
