Angela Fan

Llama 3 core contributor and Llama 2 co-author; machine translation research at Meta's FAIR, including NLLB

Meta's AI people page describes Angela Fan as a research scientist at Facebook AI Research (FAIR) focusing on machine translation. Fan is a co-author of No Language Left Behind (2022), whose authors open sourced the work in the fairseq repository, and of the fairseq sequence-modeling toolkit paper (2019), and first author of Hierarchical Neural Story Generation (2018). Fan co-authored Llama 2 (2023) and is listed among the core contributors of The Llama 3 Herd of Models (2024).123456

Career

Meta's people page describes Angela Fan as a research scientist at Facebook AI Research (FAIR) focusing on machine translation. Before that role, Fan completed a PhD on text generation with Inria and FAIR, and earlier worked as a research engineer.1

Research

Fan's doctoral-era work centered on text generation. As first author of Hierarchical Neural Story Generation (2018), Fan and co-authors collected a dataset of human-written stories paired with writing prompts and trained models that first generate a premise and then expand it into a passage.41

In machine translation, Fan co-authored No Language Left Behind (2022), which set out to provide translation across 200 languages, including many low-resource languages, and built datasets and models toward that goal. Fan's later work includes contributions to Meta's large language models: Llama 2 in 2023, Effective Long-Context Scaling of Foundation Models in 2023, and The Llama 3 Herd of Models in 2024.2516

Open-source work

Fan co-authored the 2019 NAACL demonstration paper for fairseq, an open-source PyTorch toolkit for training translation, summarization and language models, which is published under the MIT License. The No Language Left Behind models and data were also released through the fairseq repository.372

Work and contributions

  • Llama 2 and Llama 3 Open weights

Co-author of Llama 2: Open Foundation and Fine-Tuned Chat Models (2023), which develops and releases pretrained and fine-tuned models from 7 to 70 billion parameters, and listed among the core contributors of The Llama 3 Herd of Models (2024).56

  • No Language Left Behind (NLLB) Open-source code

Co-author of No Language Left Behind: Scaling Human-Centered Machine Translation (2022), whose abstract says all contributions are open sourced in the fairseq repository's nllb branch; the fairseq repository is published under the MIT License.27

  • fairseq Open-source code

Co-author of fairseq: A Fast, Extensible Toolkit for Sequence Modeling (2019); the repository is published under the MIT License.37
